I attended my first Kundalini Yoga class when I  was a sophomore in college. My husband and I had met the previous year. We immediately started looking for…….something. We didn’t know (really) what we were looking for. We just knew everything we saw, and most of what we did was not “it.”  This first class took place in Guru Ram Das Ashram, Buffalo, N.Y. The house was a beautiful old Victorian mansion. There were several people living there, and most attended class. The aroma that surrounded us was that of Yogi Tea.  I was new to yoga, and hopeful. By the time we sang “Longtime Sun” we knew this was “it.” We began to rise early and walk to the ashram for deep meditation and chanting during the ambrosial hours.

Weeks later, we moved into the ashram, Yogi Bhajan came to visit and teach. He performed a wedding ceremony for us and another couple. Wow!

Each morning we would awaken to a musician who went door to door chanting “Rise up, Rise up.” Later I learned to play that song on my autoharp and woke the Brooklyn Ashram residents daily for years. Sadhana, a personal practice in community, became the cornerstone of each day.

Yes, that is part of my history. It was the beginning of personal practice. I was amazed at how much energy I was able to gather, how much clearer my thinking, how capable I began to feel in new situations (volunteering, working with disabled children, being a member of a large spiritual community). Each class I attended gave me more.  Against all odds,  I went for it. I began to live my life.

I invite you to live yours. Go beyond the limit you’ve set for yourself. Give yourself this chance on Saturday mornings.  Come and learn techniques taught by Yogi Bhajan; some pranayama, some kriyas, some long meditations, some short. Each week, I will introduce you to some of my favorites. Then you can decide if something you have experienced is “it.” Perhaps you will integrate it into your daily life and let yourself welcome the results.
