To keep up, or not to keep up; that is the question.

Yogi Bhajan, the Master of Kundalini Yoga, was very fond of inspiring his students to “Keep up, so they’d be kept up!”  You probably have heard this phrase on more than one occasion during yoga class.  One of the many beautiful things about Kundalini Yoga is that it presents us with ample opportunities to keep up.  Whether you are being asked to keep your arms up or whether you are required to stay in chair pose—whatever the asana (posture) is—you can either persevere or succumb; the choice is yours.

Kundalini Yoga is a very precise science and there are many valid reasons why you should muster the strength within in order to ‘Keep up!’  The amount of time something is done is significant.  Practising kriyas and meditations, and chanting mantras for a specific amount of time can produce the following outcomes:

3 minutes: Increased blood circulation begins, distributing enhanced endocrine secretions in the body, and electromagnetic field is affected.

7 minutes: Brain patterns begin to shift and the magnetic field surrounding the body increases in strength.

11 minutes: The nervous and glandular systems begin to clear.

22 minutes: The three minds—negative, positive and neutral—begin to balance and work together.  The subconscious mind begins to clear.

31 minutes: Endocrine secretions become totally balanced, as does the ethereal energy of the chakras.

62 minutes: The frontal lobe of the brain is stimulated, including the pituitary and pineal glands.  You work through the physical body, the emotions and mental states and are then in communication with aspects of the Divine within yourself.  These changes persist throughout the day and are reflected by positive changes in your mood and behavior.

2 ½ hours: The psyche changes in its co-relation with the surrounding magnetic field so that the subconscious mind is held firmly in the new pattern by the surrounding Universal Mind.  You can totally remake your psyche in just two and a half hours!

Even on those days when you feel you don’t have enough time to devote time to your practice, make some time.  Just three minutes can provide immense benefits.

Furthermore, the number of days you devote to any aspect of your spiritual practice is important.  According to Yogi Bhajan, there is a specific period of time required to break old habits or patterns and develop new ones.

40 Days are required to change/break a habit. Your physical body actually renews all the cells in your bloodstream every forty days!
90 Days are needed to confirm the habit.
120 Days are essential to confirm that the new habit is who you are.
1000 Days are a confirmation that you have mastered the new habit.

Ultimately, you determine how long you will spend on a particular kriya or meditation, but there is no denying that the investment in time is well worth the dividends you’ll reap.  Your Soul will love you for your commitment and dedication, and your life will become joyous, rewarding and miraculous.
